What is Hypnotherapy?
Hypnotherapy has been used over the past hundred plus years and became more popular in the past 70
years. Hypnotherapy or Hypnosis is a technique used to lower and slow down Brain Wave Frequencies.
We humans have different speeds and frequencies of brain waves; when we are in a conscious, alert and
in a mentally active state (like solving a problem, having a conversation, doing an activity that requires
mental focus and precision) the brain waves move in a rapid state. This is called Beta Waves. As we relax
and come into a calmer state of mind, our brain waves change to Alpha Waves (when we are relaxed,
calm, comfortable). We can even become more relaxed such as when we might drop into a near sleep
(that place right before falling asleep or right before waking up from sleep). This is called Theta Wave
State. This is the place or sweet spot where hypnotherapy becomes a very powerful tool for life
changes, busting habits, combating pain and even trauma. This is the place where the mind is very
relaxed and calm, not quite asleep and very open to suggestion (it is the state just before falling asleep
or just before waking up). Delta Brain Waves are very low and slow in frequency and speed and occur
when we are asleep. There is also a very rapid state called Gamma Waves which occur during times of
high experiential or informational processing. An example of this might be when a person is in therapy
and the mind is processing and resolving a past trauma or emotionally charged memory. The brain
waves become very rapid as resolution and healing take place (almost like when a computer defrags and
puts files back in order and into the correct spot).
Hypnotherapy aims to slow and lower brain waves to Theta Frequency State where the mind is open to
positive suggestion and symbolic metaphor. This is a very good place to introduce or suggest good
healthy habits, lifestyle, or counter anything that has become problematic in the person’s life. Over 80%
of humans can achieve a hypnotic state and the other 20% can still achieve a meditative Alpha
Frequency State which is still optimal for creating positive change.
